Melkor and Fingolfin by Vihola Melkor and Fingolfin by Vihola
The epic duel between Fingolfin and Melkor is one of my favourite scenes from the Silmarillion.

This painting was TheOneRing.net J.R.R Tolkien fan art competition winner.

Tools: Photoshop and Wacom Intuos.

UPDATE: Thank you for the Daily Deviation! I couldn't have wished for a better Xmas present :) And thanks for all the wonderful comments, I've read every single one of them!

Daily Deviation

Melkor and Fingolfin by *Vihola is a breath-taking tribute to one of the scenes from the Silmarillion. ( Featured by alexandrasalas )

Really beautiful piece! Great atmosphere and control of the focal point. You can feel the thickness in the air! You are also doing a great job using value to enhance the narrative of the story (dark vs light). I have one constructive comment if you'll indulge me. I think that you may want to try cropping the piece in a bit on the right (focusing on the left side of the image). The power in this composition is in its vertical contrast between the figures and by making it a non square image you'll just push that home. Congratz on your Daily Deviation!

Swings his hammer
Down on him

I like your rendering here, and what I'm about to say isn't a criticism of your piece, because I've read the Silmarillion three or four times, and this image is true to form to the tale, but I wonder if fantasy authors, or just authors in general, ever take into consideration the physical parameters of what they're writing about.

Melkor/Morgroth was said to be one big bad dude, but you wonder how anybody fought him, or vice versa.  just me :)

This is my go-to image, when I imagine Morgoth.  I love the varying portions of sharp detail and vague hints of shadow and form.  I found this some time ago, and I still love it.

This is a powerful, awesome portrayal of the duel between the Great Enemy and the brave king of the noldor in exile! This painting is easily one of the best ones that i've ever seen of the events of the Quenta silmarillion. Please for the love of all that is epic, PAINT MORE LOTR stuff pretty please!!

This work is incredible. This image alone could get me to try and tackle the Simarillion one more time. It was a little beyond me as a young teenager.

I love this picture, as well as the story of Melkor vs Fingolfin. In the end it was a mere elf that managed to cripple Melkor in single combat.

Awesome! I im mediately recognized this as melkor and fingolfin. It is also one of my favorite stories. There's a german band called Blind Guardian that put the story into song (they are huge Tolkien fans). If you like metal, you should check it out, it's called: Time stands still at the Iron Hill.

This is also one of my favourite scenes. I did a painting of it years ago. It's decent, though I'd like to revisit it.

As for yours it's one of the best depictions of this scene that I've seen. The foggy colours are wonderful and the light of Fingolfin's sword really shines. Nice touch also with Melkor's horns and spikes. It's a different sort of depiction of him, but I really like it. Well done.
